Abstract de la charla:

“Child advocates argue that all children have the right to grow up in a safe environment that encourages healthy development. However, ethnic and culturally diverse populations living in urban communities across the United States lack access to healthy foods and opportunities to engage in physical activity. The rights of children are being infringed upon due to economic and environmental factors associated with limited access to fresh and healthy foods, lack of access to public parks and green spaces, and increasing exposure to social problems. This presentation describes the use of the Social Ecological Model (SEM) and community-based participatory research methodologies to create change in children’s environments. The SEM analyses different levels of influence on children’s opportunities to engage in healthy choices. These levels of influence go from the individual level to social policies and social structures. Three interdisciplinary studies are described in this presentation: First, the author describes an interdisciplinary collaborative effort to evaluate the introduction of salda bars in Chicago Public School. Second, the author describes the development and evaluation of a wellness program designed for low-income Latino families. The third study describes the use of a Photovoice participatory methodology to engage elementary school students in an analysis of the activities that keep them healthy and activities and things that may not support a healthy lifestyle. Based on the SEM used to analyze the results of all three studies, the author discusses the social justice implications of providing ethnically and culturally diverse populations in the United States with opportunities to engage in healthy lifestyles. The implications of using community-based participatory strategies are also discussed”.

ACTUALIZACIÓN (26/4/2010): Nueva fecha y horario para la actividad: 28 de abril a las 17.30.
