La doctorando Romina Cachia presentó su trabajo de investigación “Personal Networks as a Proxy for Sense of Community“, tutorizada por el profesor Isidro Maya Jariego.
This study contributes to the debate on personal networks and communities, and attempts to explore a possible link in the context of new media and mobility. The research has been undertaken using personal network analysis, interviews and questionnaires, on a sample of 15 foreign individuals residing in Seville, aged between 24 and 37 years. The paper investigates a new approach for eliciting communities through personal networks and also identifies various characteristics of the communities elicited. It also explores the sense of community experienced with a selection of the groups and the communities and the major characteristics of the personal networks derived. Results indicate that the personal networks method generated three times more communities than the spontaneous method. Through the examination of this method, it became clear that the role of groups cannot be ignored because for many respondents groups and communities are interrelated. This study shows that while communities provide a latent over arching sense of community, groups provide a higher, more specific and functional sense of belonginess. Of the communities identified, communities outside Seville predominated showing the significant role of new media technologies in how respondents connected with their groups and communities. Six different typologies of respondents´ own visualisations of their personal networks have been identified reflecting egos’ perception of their own networks.
Incidentes críticos interculturales Octubre 13, 2009

El doctorando Ignacio Ramos Vidal presentó su trabajo de investigación “El análisis de incidentes críticos en contextos interculturales: un estudio de casos en España y Argentina“ , tutorizado por el profesor Isidro Maya Jariego.
El estudio que se presenta analiza un total de 63 incidentes críticos (40 recogidos en España y 23 en Argentina). A través del análisis de contenido y del examen de los conflictos, se estudian los tipos de elementos culturales, los aspectos emocionales y las estrategias de gestión de conflictos presentes en los incidentes críticos, así como los contextos de interacción específicos donde estos se producen. Los resultados apuntan en primer lugar a la influencia de las diferencias culturales en la aparición del conflicto. En segundo lugar a la importancia del contexto de interacción en la aparición de determinados conflictos culturales. En tercer lugar a que los conflictos culturales aparecen frecuentemente asociados a la presencia de prejuicios y estereotipos. En cuarto lugar a que conflictos que son presentados como culturales por los participantes, realmente subyacen conflictos de otra naturaleza. Finalmente se señala como línea de investigación futura el estudio de la mayor distancia cultural, como factor que afecta a la aparición de conflictos culturales y a la aparición de determinados prejuicios y estereotipos asociados a dichas diferencias culturales.

Gabriele Giorgi, profesor de la Universidad de Florencia, impartirá en el programa de doctorado “La intervención social con la comunidad” una sesión sobre el acoso laboral: “Workplace bullying. Some empirical findings across countries“. En su presentación resumirá una investigación transcultural que compara los casos japonés e italiano.
La sesión está abierta a la participación de los interesados y tendrá lugar el lunes 21 a las 16.30 en la Sala de Grupos del Departamento de Psicología Social.

Workplace bullying. Some empirical findings across countries. Since about 1990, studies have been conducted in the area of workplace bullying/mobbing at work. These studies have contributed to a better understanding of what is going on when someone at the workplace is subjected to negative social acts. A consensus in assimilating the terms bullying/mobbing seems to have been established. Correspondingly, a mutual understanding of what comprises workplace bullying seems to have been obtained. Most researchers use definitions resembling the one suggested by Einarsen, Hoel, Zapf and Cooper (2003). Cross-cultural researches, however, appear to be limited in this field of study (Giorgi & Majer, 2009).
Firstly, this presentation addresses the measurement of bullying in Italy. Above 3000 Italian employees compiled the Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-R) Italian version (Giorgi, Matthiesen & Einarsen 2006; Giorgi) across more than 20 organizations. Findings highlighted that bullying is clearly linked to the organizational context, though the nature of the experience varies among companies. Results showed that also the occurrence of each negative act (included in the NAQ-R) varies significantly among the considered organizations. Italian bullying prevalence was also compared with Japanese (Asakura, Ando & Giorgi, 2007) and Turkish (Yildiz, Tuzunturk & Giorgi, 2008) data. Indeed, the Negative Acts Questionnaire Revised was also administered to a consistent sample of Japanese and Turkish workers. Significant differences on bullying exposure across countries have been found on a number of variables such as basic demographics and workplace factors. Interesting findings, especially from Japan, will be thus presented in this lecture.
Further, the relationship of workplace bullying with organizational climate in Italy will be analysed (Giorgi, 2009). Finally, the lecture will point out a possible relationship of the construct of workplace bullying with emotional intelligence as well as with the new construct of organizational intelligence (Giorgi & Majer, 2008, Giorgi & Majer, 2009).
